5-4-08 On this type of Fly Fishing resort and lifestyle advertising photography the difficulty is getting a great location. A lot of fly fishing imagery is inherently challenging due to a majority of the locations being in small streams & rivers that are surrounded by trees. This plus most rivers and streams run North-South meaning getting early or late light on the subject is a problem. I talked to my client explaining what I was looking for and she told me about this location. We drove to where we could park the vehicles & I re-packed my camera bag to lighten the load for the 2 mile hike into the woods, downhill. When we arrived it was about 2 hours before sunset and after a quick scout I determined, that due to a high ridge covered with trees to the west, the last light would disappear about 30-40 minutes before sunset. I started to shoot within 10 minutes of arriving directing the talent to where I thought I could get some stunning imagery. I was able to shoot about 650+ images using the last vestiges of light before packing up and hiking back up the hill. 4-22-08 - Magazine Cover Shot - The 2008 June-July issue of American Cowboy Magazine. This image was shot at sunset in Glendo, Wyoming. 3-18-08 - Arizona - This is a behind the scenes video of an Advertising Fashion photography shoot that was produced in a private home in Cave Creek, AZ. This was shot for Patricia Wolf, a fashion designer in Texas. 3-5-08 - Atlanta - This fashion photography project was shot in a field of weeds and this segment took about 20-30 minutes to shoot. The gear we used: Canon Cameras and California Sunbounce. 1-22-08 - Colorado - These advertising photographs were shot for a cowboy boot company needing some lifestyle imagery for marketing. In winter the weather is very important. This was one of only a very few good weather days on this shoot. The temperature was about 15-20 degrees and I'm standing in show about 3-4 feet deep with the camera in one hand & my horses lead rope in the other. I wanted be be sure I could ride back & not walk back. 1-19-08 - This is one of several fashion advertising photography images I shot for a client to run ads in "Cowboys & Indians Magazine." The client contacted me the day after the official magazine deadline had passed and wondered if I could get the job done in time. Like most magazines there is an official deadline, the next deadline and then the "absolute drop dead" deadline extended to very few clients. Part of the problem was getting the samples in time. The client & I were both at an International trade show in Denver and some of the samples were not available until 5 days later which was a Thursday. The weather was another problem because it was January in Colorado. I knew the location I was going to shoot would work as long as it was not snowing. I had to shoot a spring time garment, 2 summer time garments & one fall/winter garment. The fall/winter was going to be easy but the spring & summer were going to take a lot of work. The weather was not going to be good until Saturday, one day past the second deadline. I talked to the National sales manager and due to my record of never missing a deadline ever she said I had an extra 4 days which brought it to the "absolute drop dead" deadline. I cast for models, hired the model, had all of the samples flown in & shot the project on Saturday. Because of very heavy traffic due to skiers going to Vail, the model was 90 minutes late. It was 15-20 degrees outside where I shot 3 of the images. 12-25-07 - I just added a new series of images: "Desert Spring" in my "Personal Photography Work" section. This was shot in the last 2 hours of the day in the desert just outside of the resort town of Scottsdale, AZ. I had been watching the weather for several days & I finally got the weather I was looking for, black clouds, rain with sunshine. When I left the house it was raining but I thought it would clear just enough to shoot. So put on a slicker and jumped on the quad and roared off to the location I had scouted a few days before, about 4 miles from the ranch. The light was stunning and ranged from hard light to overcast. The lenses used ranged from the Canon 15mm fisheye, the 16-35mm zoom lens and the 70-200mm zoom lens all on a Canon professional digital camera shooting RAW format and then processed in Photoshop. 12-2-07 On these types of resort lifestyle advertising images it is extraordinarily difficult to get all of the elements perfect. The water needs to be very clear, the water can't be too deep, the waves need to be almost not there, the models need to be comfortable in seaweed filled waters, with the occasional Jellyfish cruising by, and everyone gets red marks on the body from laying on and moving around in sand. Additionally the best time to shoot these is in the Winter and with most models having a small percentage of body fat this means they get cold quickly in the water. 11-24-07 - This lifestyle advertising photography shot was taken with the last 3 minutes of direct sunlight of the day. We had arrived and it started to rain so we all stayed in the cars until it had almost stopped. I got out and everyone followed me to the beach. I knew there was a lifeguard stand close by that would give some protection from the rain. We arrived & I had the models climb onto the stand which had a narrow walkway all the way around it and it was under the roof. So I started to shoot just to get the models warmed up. I then moved them around the corner and shot some more. Within 3-5 minutes of the sun being down the clouds moved and I got 3 minutes of direct sunlight. 11-24-07 - This editorial style beauty photography image was shot in a hotel room in Boca Raton and the entire shoot took about 2 hours. The challenge is to shoot in such a confined space and still get a great shot. 11-21-07 - This advertising beauty photography image was shot on Hollywood Beach. The original concept was to shoot in the water however the wind was too strong and huge waves would make it almost impossible to shoot so I had the model sit on a lifeguard stand to elevate her which kept the sand out of her eyes. I did not like her swimsuit for this type of beauty shot so I grabbed a towel I had brought and had her drop the swimsuit straps and hold the towel up. We shot 80 images in about 20 minutes. 10-28-07 - This personal Photography project was shot in the Los Angeles flower market and took about 4 hours to shoot. The market opens around 3-4 am & starts to close around noon, so you need to arrive early. The only problem is deciding on what to shoot, there are so many choices. 10-06-07 - This series of Advertising Beauty Photography shots were shot in the garden of a private villa in Malcesine, Italy in the rain. The model is wearing mascara and lipstick for make up and no other makeup at all. 10-06-07 - This series of Advertising Beauty Photography shots were shot in the garden of a private villa in Malcesine, Italy in the rain. The model is wearing mascara and lipstick for make up and no other makeup at all. 10-05-07 - This is a series of travel type of images. They were all shot in a private home in Milano, Italy near the center of town, the Duomo. 10-4-07 - In this series of advertising beauty Photography shots the model had mascara & lipstick, no other makeup was used. Lighting wise is sunlight with 2 California Sunbounce reflectors. The location was in a private home in downtown Milano. The construction on the home started in the 1300's. 10-8-07 - This series of advertising resort Photography images was shot in about 3 hours late in the day. These lifestyle images were shot for a rental villa in Malcesine, Italy, near Verona, on Lake Garda. I had communicated with the models what to bring in the way of wardrobe & I brought some of my resort collection of wardrobe too. 9-23-07 - Milano, Italy - So there I was, in the "daylight" studio shooting an advertising project for a client and I just happen to glance out the window while the client was working on styling the product. It has been raining all day and I saw this street lifestyle scene. The combination of the red car & the red umbrella was more than I could ignore. But there was also a somewhat well... really a rather rotund woman using a ugly umbrella walking in the opposite direction. So I just removed her hefty self and her tacky umbrella. 9-22-07 - So after my June shoot in the little old ladies’ house in Nesso, I have wanted to go back and shoot the Castle ruins. These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot for the Como Province Tourist Office. 9-22-07 - These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot for the Como Province Tourist Office of this Romanesque church, San Giacomo di Spurano, on Lake Como, is in the town of Ossuccio. The pre-Roman origins of this village are confirmed by votive altar from the second century A.D. that belonged to some people called the "Ausuciates", who gave the village their name. 9-22-07 - These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot in a cemetery on Lake Como in a town called Carate Urio. It is the tomb of Luigi Comitti and his family. I noticed the pattern as soon as I started to head down the stairs. 9-21-07 - These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot in Como, Italy on a project for the Como Province Tourist Office, go here to see 8 selects and read on how I was able to expand the contrast & tonal range to show detail in very deep shadows and still hold the brightest highlight. 9-23-07 - This was shot directly across the street from the North Milano Railroad station in Como, a commuter rail line. When I lived here in Como I would take the train returning from Milan to the last stop, Lago di Como, cross the street & just sit on one of the many benches and look at the lake & the lights at night. I was walking about and this group of swans landed in one of them several little harbors in Como. My first Italian fashion shoot in 1985 was just off to the right where the boats are pulled up the "steps". 9-20-07 - These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot in Como, Italy on a project for the Como Province Tourist Office, go here to see 2 selects. 9-13-07 - Added an Advertising Photography Problem Solving section showing solutions to advertising and editorial fashion, beauty, industrial, lifestyle, lingerie and swim wear photographic problems. Go here to look at some examples. 9-10-07 - Industrial Advertising Photography project. When shooting Advertising Industrial imagery or Editorial Industrial imagery, it is sometimes difficult to make it interesting. Take these HVAC items: Almost devoid of color, largely flat panels shaped like a box and made from galvanized steel. The key is to shoot them without large areas of light and without dark areas. Also I needed to hold the specular highlights to zero. Given the shiny metallic material these industrial items are made of, a tall order. 8-19-07 - Sunrise in the golf resort town of Boca Raton, FL. - My client had just bought this golf course a few months before I arrived. The roughs, fairways and greens were all in a sad state and he needed imagery to help market the course. My contact with the course had called me due to my being a lifestyle and golf resort shooter & asked if I could make the course look better than it really did. After arriving at the course I spent hours in the golf cart looking for angles to shoot. I finally found a few and even then I really had to work in making the course look at least good. 8-18-07 - Florida - This Lifestyle Resort Advertising and/or Editorial Photography image was shot near Miami Beach. On these types of images it is extraordinarily difficult to get all of the elements perfect. The waves, the wind and the current are all moving the models and the photographer. I position the models perfectly and a big wave comes in and moves them up and to the right or the left, sometimes several feet. What once was a perfectly framed image is now a problem because they have been moved up. In doing so their heads that were outlined by the beach are now in such a position that they have palm trees growing out of them, not too professional. Technically this is some of the most demanding imagery I have ever shot. Not only do I have the usual exposure, composition, model direction, watching for wardrobe problems I now have to deal with models constantly moving up & down & to the left, to the right and getting salt water in their eyes & nose. Plus I’m moving up, down to the left to the right. When a big wave breaks over the housing the focus does not work very well for several seconds. In addition to all of this the location only works light wise at sunrise. PLUS on this shot the sun was totally blocked by the clouds so I then had to use an electronic waterproof strobe to provide the light needed followed by a huge amount of Photoshop work to finish the image. 8-17-07 - Florida - This Lifestyle Resort Advertising and/or Editorial Photography image was shot near Miami Beach. This image was shot on a ranch in Colorado with a Canon professional digital camera set on 100 ISO, 1/320 second exposure, using an 85mm f1.8 lens @ f2.2 then processed using Photoshop CS3 and using the Adobe RAW converter. A California Sunbounce reflector was used to add fill light. 6-4-07 - Colorado - This was shot for a Western Lifestyle Advertising Resort Photography client just outside of resort towns of Vail and Beaver Creek. 6-3-07 - Colorado - This was shot for a Western Fashion Advertising Photography client just outside of resort towns of Vail and Beaver Creek. 6-3-07 - Colorado - Location lingerie fashion photography shoot. 5-30-07 - Sunset in the rain - Colorado - This was shot for a Cowboy Hat Advertising client. 4-14-07 - Arizona - This was shot for a Western Fashion Advertising Photography client just outside of resort filled Scottsdale in the Arizona desert. 3-31-07 - California - This was shot on a resort looking horse ranch for Rockies Jeans, a Western Fashion Advertising Photography client. 1-26-07 - Colorado - This was shot for a Western Fashion Advertising Photography client. This was shot about 20 seconds before the sun went behind a mountain and the temperature was about 34 degrees. This image was shot with a Canon professional digital camera, EF28mm-70mm f2.8 lens set at 28mm and f4, 1/500 second exposure handheld, 100 ISO and then processed using Photoshop CS3 Beta and using the beta RAW converter. It was close to dark before we got back to the corral and by then the temperature was close to 25 degrees. 1-24-07 - Colorado - This was shot for a Western Fashion Advertising Photography client. 1-22-07 - Colorado - This was about 40 minutes after the sun had gone down for a Western Lifestyle Advertising Photography client, a trail riding outfitter. 1-22-07 - Western Lifestyle Advertising Photography client, a trail riding outfitter. 1-19-07 - Colorado - This was shot late afternoon for a Western Lifestyle Advertising Photography project. 1-17-07 - Colorado - This was shot for a Western Fashion Advertising Photography project. 1-11-07 - Shot an Editorial Beauty Photography project with Danyelle. 1-3-07 - Added a new Flash Movie: The year 2006 in advertising photographs. This promo features fashion photography, beauty photography, lifestyle photography, cowboy photography, western lifestyle photography, aircraft photography and personal work. 12-6-06 - Shot a series of images for a Cowboy Fashion Photography client. Shot just outside of Las Vegas, NV on a perfect afternoon in direct sunlight. Notice that the hats do not loose detail even in the very hard sunlight. This is because I had an assistant 70 feet towards the sun with a light modifying device that is normally only used in the motion picture industry. This allows me to maintain the detail without loosing the "edge" of hard light. I had another assistant off to my left with a 4' x 6' California Sunbounce reflector bouncing light primarily on the woman's face to ensure a good "Beauty" light. This image was shot with a 200mm f1.8 lens shot at f1.8. Shooting a "Fast" telephoto lens wide open makes the background blur out which pulls the eye to the models & the hats. The image was then processed with an Adobe Camera RAW Converter then retouched and finished in Photoshop. 10-31-06 - Added a series of 6 Advertising Flash web banners shot & produced for a professional race team. You can also see them on my Flash Movie page. 10-30-06 - Wolcott, Colorado - This was shot on a cold morning for a Cowboy Web site Advertising Photography project. Web site Advertising Photography project. 9-29-06 - Sunset in Wolcott, Colorado - This was shot for a Cowboy Advertising Photography project. 9-28-06 - Sunrise in Wolcott, Colorado - Shot for 30 minutes for a Cowboy Advertising Photography project. This project started well before sunrise which was about 7 AM. We were on the ranch about 5:30 AM to call in the herd of horses. The cowboys then saddled up and rode out at pre-dawn to locate the herd of cattle and drive them to the location I had scouted a few days before. I had several radios in use to be able to communicate with the cowboys as to the status of pushing the cattle in position and then directing them where to push the herd next. 9-26-06 - Sunrise in Wolcott, Colorado - This was shot while scouting for a Cowboy Advertising Photography Photography project. 9-11-06 - Shot an Advertising Beauty Photography project with Diana. 9-9-06 - Predawn & Sunrise, shot an Advertising Lifestyle Resort Photography project on Hollywood Beach. Shot with a Canon 85mm f1.8 set at f3.2 on a Canon digital camera. 5-6-06 - Shot an Advertising Beauty Lingerie Photography project with Vanessa. 4-28-06 - Just posted a new Flash Cowboy movie project which is from a series Cowboy images taken in Wolcott, CO. at one of my favorite locations to shoot in the winter. It is just off I-70 making it easy to get to, it has a huge pasture allowing sweeping light to get in, it has several stands of trees, mounted Cowboys, 60-70 horses and about 100 head of Texas Longhorn cattle. The owner always was after me to shoot in the fall so in September I flew out and spent a week shooting. In this image I'm panning the camera with the action to help keep some of the image sharp enough to see what is in the scene and yet still have a lot of blur. The very nature of panning with a long shutter speed while hand holding the camera means I need to shoot a lot of images to get one or two stunning images. The opening Flash movie segment, which took about three hours to design and prep & less than 10 minutes to shoot, was shot 10-15 minutes after the sun had set which allowed me to get the exposure down to 1/10 of a second and get the sky I wanted. What I wanted was for the cattle to walk without stopping to graze. I showed my cowboy wrangler what I needed and he put some feed down at the north end of the pasture and allowed the cattle to eat and then pushed them off of the feed to the southern end. He then had the cowboys push the cattle to the north end while I walked alongside the cowboys & the cows looking at framing. When I had determined the Line I wanted the cows to walk I showed this to the head wrangler. He then had the cowboys push the cattle back south & held them there until I said, Go! What I did was to shoot a few frames, pick up the camera bag and run to the next spot and shoot a few frames, grab the camera bag and run again. The time frame that a photographer has to shoot this quality, intensity and color of light after sunset is around 8-10 minutes, which is not long. At the same time I'm giving directions to the wranglers holding the herd tight, keeping the speed to the level I was looking for and moving in the direction I wanted. The second Flash movie segment was shot earlier in the day while prepping for the final sequence. 4-22-06 - Shot an Advertising beauty Photography project on Bethany near Atlanta, GA. A clean headshot photographed about 1 hour before sunset.
