2-4-10 - This cowboy image was one of a series of horses running in the snow shot in Colorado. When I drove up to the ranch it was snowing heavily and had been for sometime. So when I shot these images I was working with untracked snow. 12-19-09 - This Cowboy Lifestyle image was shot on a ranch in Colorado for a client's Christmas card. The real story here is not how I shot the photo, but what I had to do to get the photo, specifically the tree. 12-10-09 - This Fashion Editorial imagewas taken in the oldest part of Milan, Italy. By controlling the light I am able to control what the viewer will look at, which in this case is the wardrobe. To get this shot, we sometimes had to move out of the way of cars that sometimes happened by on one of the narrowest streets in Milan. There is also a link where you can read & see how I shot this image and what the location looked like before I finished the shot. 12-3-09 - This Cowboy Lifestyle Advertising image was shot for a client needing cowboy lifestyle advertising & marketing images. In all seasons the weather is very important to get great images. The temperature was about 15 degrees (-9 C) with very dry air with a few clouds. Sometimes I have had to wait for days to get good weather to shoot in, and this was no exception. 12-1-09 - This Advertising style Beauty image was taken in the stairwell of my Milan, Italy apartment. Just abut all of the light is coming from a single strobe head, made by Lumedyne, behind the model. Because the entire stairwell is painted white the light bounces all around giving very soft light on her skin. 11-29-09 - This Fashion image was taken in the stairwell of my Milan, Italy apartment. All of the light is from a single strobe head placed at the top of the stairs and is raw light, meaning it is not modified. Because the stairwell is painted white there is a lot of light bouncing around which helps to slightly soften the shadows. 11-2-09 -This Beauty image was taken in the stairwell of my Milan, Italy apartment by using daylight and shooting into the stairwell for the background. The sun was behind the buildings which were behind me and you can see the silhouette of the buildings & the skylight in the top of Joanna's eyes. 10-25-09 - This Fashion image was shot in Milan, Italy with a Brazilian model, based in Paris, was in Milan to shoot a project and was leaving for home the next day. When we walked out I noticed that the light was hitting part of the building & was flooding this part of the courtyard with beautiful soft light. 10-24-09 - This Fashion image was taken in Milan, Italy with a Brazilian model living in Paris in Milano to shoot a project and was leaving the next day. When we walked out I noticed that the light was hitting part of the building & was flooding this part of the courtyard with beautiful soft light. 10-4-09 - This Travel Editorial image is of Positano, Italy. We were going to a restaurant in the hills above Positano that specialized in grilling meat over an open fire. 10-2-09 - This Fashion image was taken in the stairwell of my Milan, Italy apartment. All of the light is from a single strobe head placed at the top of the stairs and is raw light, meaning it is not modified. Because the stairwell is painted white there is a lot of light bouncing around which helps to slightly soften the shadows. You can see this on her right leg, the front is brightest, the back is just a bit darker because the light is reflecting off of the white wall behind her. The the side of her leg facing the viewer is dark due to no light reflecting on that side, just a dark walkway. 10-1-09 - This Beauty image was taken in my Milan, Italy apartment. All of the light is from a single strobe head and is raw unfiltered light except for a grid spot used to help confine the light. 9-26-09 - This Body image was taken in Milan, Italy of a model from Brazil. 9-24-09 - This Travel Editorial image was shot in Milano from the balcony of the apartment just after sunset. It is a great view but it is also a 5 floor walk up. It is located in the center of Milano about a 10-15 minute walk to Via Monte Napoleone. 9-24-09 - This Fashion image was taken in Milan, Italy and was the second look of the day. This is one of 2 models from Beatrice Models and they are twins. 9-12-09 - This Fashion image was taken in North Carolina close to Highlands. We drove within a half a mile of the location and packed the gear in. In this image the primary light is strobe. Clouds ruled the sky this day and it was mostly heavy overcast with brief moments of midday sun. This coupled with heavy foliage cover made for some long exposures with 100 or 200 ISO. 8-20-09 - This Editorial Travel - personal work Flash movie of an old boat is in the Salerno, Italy commercial port. This one time elegant motorsailer is rotting away still carefully supported & waiting for the repairs that may never come. This entire area was once covered by buildings that stored & repaired engines & boats. They are all gone now, leaving only this tree & boat. 8-4-09 - This Lingerie Beauty Project was shot in a field full of green weeds. This image was shot with all natural light. 6-12-09 - This Western Lifestyle image was shot during a scouting trip. I was shooting another advertising project for Old Gringo Boots in San Diego & I wanted to do some prep work so I had flown in a day early. The client's marketing director had selected a couple of locations and I wanted to look at them to be sure they would actually work. So often people just do not understand problems most locations have and there is almost always a challenge. On this location one of the areas under consideration caused me to immediately call the grip rental company I use when shooting on the west coast, and I added more light control gear. I also asked my lead assistant to bring one more photo assistant to help. While at this home I saw the skull, the light and sky were perfect so I took the image. 6-1-09 - This Editorial Aircraft Image was shot at Sky Harbor in Phoenix. The aircraft landing is a Boeing 737. 5-20-09 - This lingerie beauty project was shot in about 2 hours in Milan, Italy with a model from Fashion. Teodora has wonderful skin and shape and worked very well with a minimum of direction. 5-17-09 - This Editorial Aircraft Image was shot at Sky Harbor in Phoenix. The Southwest aircraft is a Boeing 737. 5-16-09 - This Western Lifestyle Cowboy image was shot for The Milano Hat Company for it's Larry Mahan Hat division. This image was never planed, I was there to shoot with rodeo cowboy legend Larry Mahan for a series of catalog covers, advertising and web use. When the wranglers were setting the shot up this group of horses started to run along the top of the dam. I pulled up the camera, framed the shot & took about 15 photographs in 3 seconds... then they were gone. When I sent this image to the company the president saw it & wanted to use it for the outside of the new box they were about to make. 5-15-09 - This Advertising Beauty image was shot with Chelsea was shot in a field. This image was shot with natural light. 5-7-09 - This Fashion Advertising image was shot near Scottsdale, Arizona for Patricia Wolf, a desert southwest clothing designer. 5-6-09 - This Western Lifestyle Fashion Cowboy image was shot for The Justin Hat Company for catalog, web & ad use. This was the second shot of the day. At 4:30 am we loaded all the vehicles at the hotel & drove some 60 minutes to this location, at 8700' elevation, on National Forest property in Colorado. The wranglers driving a truck pulling a trailer with the horses and tack followed us there. Every time I changed locations my styling crew changed the models wardrobe & the wranglers changed horses and saddles so it would not be immediately apparent that all the shots were shot on one day. 5-6-09 - This Advertising Beauty image shot with Sarah was shot in a private home. This image was shot with a mix of natural & strobe light. 5-5-09 - This personal project was shot in about 2 hours in the Princeton area of South Miami, Florida. I was on my way to a shoot in the keys, when I saw this location. A couple of days later I drove back & shot 200+ images. I knew this was going to be pretty cool but not until I thought to show what can be done with color images then converting them to B&W did I realize the full potential. 5-4-09 - This travel editorial image of an old boat is in the Salerno, Italy commercial port. This one time elegant motorsailer is rotting away still carefully supported & waiting for the repairs that may never come. 3-29-09 This Editorial Style Aircraft Advertising Image was shot from the Atlanta airport's International Concourse while a Delta airplane was taking off. The Atlanta airport, in addition to being the busiest airport in the world with 5 runways, is also Delta Airlines home base. All the planes you see in this shot, including the one in the air taking off, are Delta planes. This image was shot during late afternoon light in the rain. I just waited until most of the clouds hiding the sun to thinned out a bit then waited for a Delta plane to take off. The wait for the clouds to get out of the way took a quite a while, waiting for a Delta plane to take off did not not take long at all. 3-17-09 - This Resort advertising and editorial image was shot at Villa La Cassinella on Lake Como, Lago di Como, Italy. This private rental villa is just stunning in it's location, architecture & gardens. This is an outdoor dining area with Lake Como in the background. 3-12-09 - This Advertising beauty image was one of a series shot in about 2 hours in a field of dried weeds near Atlanta. This "Look" took about 30 minutes to set up & shoot. 3-2-09 - This Travel Image was shot in Milano during the rain, I had seen this shot when I was shooting my Piazza 24 Maggio Flash movie - but by the time I had finished shooting those images the shop was closed. So I revisited it when it was raining again, which this time of year is often. When shooting street scenes I disdain using a tripod so I shoot hand held, frequently with the lens wide open. 2-16-09 - This Industrial Advertising Image was shot in the studio for a turbine blade & vane manufacturer. All of these items went into turbine engines and are made from stainless steel or titanium to very exacting tolerances. Our client on this job typically had a 6-10 month backlog of orders. Within 6 month of the brochure being printed they had over 2 years of orders, roughly $20,000,000+ and more coming in. Needless to say they were very happy. 2-15-09 - This beauty advertising image was shot in about an hour in Milan, Italy. Lucia, a model with Fashion Models, arrived in the afternoon and we shot a few looks. The last look was walking in front of the house between Via Nerino & Via Torino and shot while using the very last light left in the day. 2-14-09 - This Western Lifestyle Cowboy image was shot for The Justin Hat Company for catalog, web & ad use. 2-8-09 This Editorial Aircraft image was shot for Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport of a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 just after takeoff. As you can see the landing gear is still not quite up. Because the paint is so shiny, the "streaks" are not streaks but are the reflection of the runway just below the fuselage. 1-15-09 - This is my 2008 in photographs Flash Movie. This e-promo has fashion, beauty, lifestyle, cowboy, travel and some personal work. 1-10-09 - This editorial style fashion photography Flash Movie shot in Milan, Italy. The location is an old building that was falling apart and is part two of this shoot. 12-19-08 - This editorial style fashion photography Flash Movie shot in Milan, Italy. The location is an old building that was falling apart and is part one of this shoot. 11-16-08 This Fashion Advertising image was shot in Cologne, Germany. I was visiting Photokina and on the drive into the event I noticed these old empty buildings. I was talking to another photographer who told me how to get in (sneaking in a gate that had been bent just enough I should say). 11-15-08 This advertising image of a Boeing 737 aircraft was shot for Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and captured in predawn light from the roof of the concourse. 10-5-08 - Milan, Italy - This editorial style fashion & beauty photography Flash Movie fashion project was shot in about 2 hours in Milan, Italy. This Russian model had a tremendous amount of poise and presence. After shooting indoors I wanted to shoot outside. I knew a spot I had shot in before so I loaded up the cameras, lenses, stands, light modifiers & strobes and was just able to squeeze all my stuff, the model & me into the very small elevator to go down to the ground floor. When we arrived at the location there just happened to be a old Moto Guzzi there. So I set the lights to work with both the model and the motorcycle. 10-4-08 This Fashion Advertising image was shot in Milan, Italy in front of a decaying Villa. I have positioned Sina in the shade and placed a battery powered location strobe with a grid spot on her overpowering the sunlight. I also have positioned a reflector in the sun to help balance out the shadows caused by the strobe. I am lying down to get the angle I wanted. 10-2-08 - Milan, Italy - This editorial style fashion & beauty photography Flash Movie was shot in about an hour in Milan, Italy. Lucia, simply a stunning model with The Fashion Model Management Agency, arrived in the afternoon and we shot a few looks. The last look was walking in front of the house between Via Nerino & Via Torino and shot while using the very last light left in the day. 10-2-08 - Milan, Italy - This editorial style fashion & beauty photography Flash Movie was shot in about 90 minutes in Milan, Italy. This model had a lot of experience, moved well, could relate to & project towards the camera and was wonderful to shoot with. The shot of her leaning against the graffiti wall was a moment of experimenting with lighting which I feel worked very well. 9-22-08 - Milan, Italy - This editorial style fashion & beauty photography Flash Movie was shot in about 45 minutes in Milan, Italy. Kalina, a Bulgarian model with Fashion Models arrived with no makeup on at all except for lip balm. Her skin quality was very good so we shot this series. 9-20-08 - Milan, Italy - This editorial style fashion & beauty photography Flash Movie was shot in about 90 minutes in Milan, Italy. This 17 year old Lithuanian model (or as she said, "in one month I'll be 18") was wonderful to shoot with. I had scouted the outside locations but on the weekend. But the time I shot, during the week, on the last location the street and sidewalks were full of cars & Vespa style scooters. So I just went around the corner. 9-19-08 - Milan, Italy - This editorial style fashion & beauty photography Flash Movie was shot in about 3 hours in an apartment in Milan, Italy. This 22 year old German model is very experienced and was just wonderful to shoot with. By having a lot of experience in front of the camera she is able to relax, move and relate to the camera without looking like she is trying. This is a mark of a true top professional. 9-18-08 - Milan, Italy - This editorial style fashion & beauty photography Flash Movie was shot midday in the apartment in Milano. The living room is quite large and is located in the middle of town, about 6 blocks from the Duomo & the Galleria. This 18 year old Russian model is brand new and was only her second shoot so a fair amount of directing was initially needed, which is very normal with new talent. But after an hour she relaxed and by then was able to, what I call, to "project". 9-10-08 This Western Lifestyle image was taken near the resort town of Vail, Colorado. We had perfect weather for this shoot and this image was used by Milano Hat Co. for an ad in W&E magazine. 9-10-08 - This editorial style beauty photography image was shot in a hotel room. Make Up info: The model is wearing mascara & lipstick only. 8-29-08 - This is a difficult to execute advertising resort image to pull off. The model has to keep her eyes open, not blow air out her nose or mouth and keep a pleasant expression. 8-29-08 - This editorial style beauty photography image was shot at sunrise in South Florida. Make Up info: The model is wearing mascara & lipstick only. 8-12-08 - This editorial style beauty photography image was shot in a hotel room in Boca Raton and the entire shoot took about 2 hours. The challenge is to shoot in such a confined space and still get a great shot. 8-11-08 - This is a technically challenging advertising resort image to pull off. Keeping everything in focus, properly centered, eyes open, no air coming out of the nose and to have the model still have a pleasant expression is tough. 8-10-08 This Fashion Advertising image was shot in South Beach for Old Gringo Boots. My original concept was to shoot a cool, interesting fashion image where the central focus was on the boots. So I designed a special camera dolly so I could follow the model while she scooted along with the camera inches above the sidewalk with the lens aimed up. 8-9-08 On these types of resort lifestyle advertising images it is extraordinarily difficult to get all of the elements perfect. 8-7-08 This Editorial Aircraft image was shot just north of Fort Lauderdale, FL airport and is a classic example of being at the right place at the right time. Plus having the right gear and knowing what to do with it. Shot with Canon Professional Digital Camera set in RAW mode with a 200mm f1.8 Canon Professional lens then processed in Photoshop. 7-21-08 - This Editorial image of a Boeing 737 aircraft was shot for Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and shot in predawn light. Shot with Canon Professional Digital Camera set in RAW mode with a 14mm f2.8 Canon Professional lens then processed in Photoshop. 7-19-08 - This was not a planned shot. I was working with a client and we were changing locations when I saw this & called my assistant over. She had the Lumedyne battery powered studio strobe with a flash head mounted to a Sunbounce Mini reflector via a SUNBOUNCE Flash-Bracket. I positioned her & the mini & shot 3 images. All of them turned out, this one was the best. 7-17-08 - I must say I really like this Advertising Product Shot. I was shooting a project for Paige Wallace, a jewelry designer based in Texas, when I came up with this idea. Like a lot of images I do, thinking up the idea was very easy by comparison to actually executing it. But after a number of false starts I finally got it. 7-16-08 - This Editorial Cowgirl image was shot in Oklahoma in the same afternoon as the shot below. 7-15-08 - This Editorial Cowgirl image was shot in Oklahoma. I arrived about an hour before this image was taken and Bobbie gave me a quick tour of part of the ranch. I selected this location to shoot due to having a wide open area, some small hills to give elevation change, a single tree in the open and cattle. In the course of the shoot I used all the of the these elements. 7-14-08 - This Travel image was taken in Minneola, KS around 5 pm. I had left Denver, CO on my way to a ranch just outside Woodward, OK to shoot with a cowgirl I had met 5 years ago & could not get my travel plans to be in Woodward at proper time of day. So I was driving & while passing through Minneola I noticed 3 old grain elevators off to my left. I thought I really would like to shoot them but the sun was headed west and it was getting late plus I had another 2 hours driving time before I got to Woodward. Knowing I wanted to scout a while to locate the right spot to work and then get me & Bobbie back on site I decided to press on. I had driven past the elevators & I knew that I would not be real happy if I did not stop & shoot. So I turned around & grabbed a camera & shot two of the 3 elevators for 20 minutes, these are two of them. 7-12-08 - Magazine Cover Shot - The 2008 September-October issue of American Cowboy Magazine. This image was shot at sunrise in Colorado. 7-3-08 This Western Lifestyle image was taken near Hardin, Montana on the Little Big Horn Battlefield and the riders are crossing the Big Horn River. This is literally a few feet from Clusters' last stand and the Calvary are part of the Real Bird reenactment that takes place in late June. This crossing is difficult in that the water is still very high for this time of year and flowing very fast and there are several holes in the bottom so instead of walking the horses are swimming, and quite often so are the riders. The only other difficulty was putting enough insect repellant on to keep the ticks off & the mosquitoes from biting. They would still land on but not stick me. 6-30-08 While driving to Billings, Montana, I noticed a storm in the distance. I kept my eye on the sky and when the clouds were perfect, I sat on the brakes & whipped the Explorer off the Interstate (Scaring my passenger half to death in that they had not a clue just what in the Sam Hill I was doing). Pulling out my camera I aimed it towards this cloud & squeezed off a few shots. 6-29-08 This image was was taken in Colorado while I was shooting a fashion project - a totally different scene & model. I had directed the model I was shooting to a different location and while she was moving I heard these 5 wranglers leading 10 saddled horses from one location to another. I turned, raised the camera & shot 3 images before returning to shoot with the model who by then was approaching her new location. This is a wonderful Western Lifestyle Cowboy image. 6-19-08 I was in Eagle, CO to scout for an up coming Fashion project for The Milano Hat Company. This was the third day I was in Eagle and Dan, the outfitter I was using for this project, & I were sitting outside enjoying the evening. I had identified several locations I wanted to shoot and I needed to know what time of day was best for each one of them. I had been up at 5 am to be able to look at how the light was going to develop in the morning so I could determine where I needed to be and how long I could spend before moving to the next location... chasing the light. The sun had been down about 10 minutes and Dan said, "look Steve." I turned my head & I could just see the top of the moon cresting over the mountain. Well I leaped up out of the chair I had seconds before thought I was going be able to relax in for a good while & commenced to hunt the closest camera and lens. I started to shoot & realized the lens I had on was too slow so I ran back I pulled my 200 f1.8 lens & started to shoot some more. Well it was too short so I then streaked back into the house & pulled out my 400mm f2.8 lens and it was just right. An example of shooting a great travel resort image by being at the right place at the right time. 5-21-08 This Fly Fishing image, shot for a resort client in Northeast Georgia, has multiple problems. It had rained heavily the night before meaning there was a lot of silt in the water, the silt was reddish in color, the underwater magnification caused the fishing line to not match where it transitions from above the water to underwater and the water was about 50 degrees. 5-4-08 On this type of Fly Fishing resort and lifestyle advertising photography the difficulty is getting a great location. A lot of fly fishing imagery is inherently challenging due to a majority of the locations being in small streams & rivers that are surrounded by trees. This plus most rivers and streams run North-South meaning getting early or late light on the subject is a problem. I talked to my client explaining what I was looking for and she told me about this location. We drove to where we could park the vehicles & I re-packed my camera bag to lighten the load for the 2 mile hike into the woods, downhill. When we arrived it was about 2 hours before sunset and after a quick scout I determined, that due to a high ridge covered with trees to the west, the last light would disappear about 30-40 minutes before sunset. I started to shoot within 10 minutes of arriving directing the talent to where I thought I could get some stunning imagery. I was able to shoot about 650+ images using the last vestiges of light before packing up and hiking back up the hill. 4-22-08 - Magazine Cover Shot - The 2008 June-July issue of American Cowboy Magazine. This image was shot at sunset in Glendo, Wyoming. 3-18-08 - Arizona - This is a behind the scenes video of an Advertising Fashion photography shoot that was produced in a private home in Cave Creek, AZ. This was shot for Patricia Wolf, a fashion designer in Texas. 3-5-08 - Atlanta - This fashion photography project was shot in a field of weeds and this segment took about 20-30 minutes to shoot. The gear we used: Canon Cameras and California Sunbounce. 1-22-08 - Colorado - These advertising photographs were shot for a cowboy boot company needing some lifestyle imagery for marketing. In winter the weather is very important. This was one of only a very few good weather days on this shoot. The temperature was about 15-20 degrees and I'm standing in show about 3-4 feet deep with the camera in one hand & my horses lead rope in the other. I wanted be be sure I could ride back & not walk back. 1-19-08 - This is one of several fashion advertising photography images I shot for a client to run ads in "Cowboys & Indians Magazine." The client contacted me the day after the official magazine deadline had passed and wondered if I could get the job done in time. Like most magazines there is an official deadline, the next deadline and then the "absolute drop dead" deadline extended to very few clients. Part of the problem was getting the samples in time. The client & I were both at an International trade show in Denver and some of the samples were not available until 5 days later which was a Thursday. The weather was another problem because it was January in Colorado. I knew the location I was going to shoot would work as long as it was not snowing. I had to shoot a spring time garment, 2 summer time garments & one fall/winter garment. The fall/winter was going to be easy but the spring & summer were going to take a lot of work. The weather was not going to be good until Saturday, one day past the second deadline. I talked to the National sales manager and due to my record of never missing a deadline ever she said I had an extra 4 days which brought it to the "absolute drop dead" deadline. I cast for models, hired the model, had all of the samples flown in & shot the project on Saturday. Because of very heavy traffic due to skiers going to Vail, the model was 90 minutes late. It was 15-20 degrees outside where I shot 3 of the images. 12-25-07 - I just added a new series of images: "Desert Spring" in my "Personal Photography Work" section. This was shot in the last 2 hours of the day in the desert just outside of the resort town of Scottsdale, AZ. I had been watching the weather for several days & I finally got the weather I was looking for, black clouds, rain with sunshine. When I left the house it was raining but I thought it would clear just enough to shoot. So put on a slicker and jumped on the quad and roared off to the location I had scouted a few days before, about 4 miles from the ranch. The light was stunning and ranged from hard light to overcast. The lenses used ranged from the Canon 15mm fisheye, the 16-35mm zoom lens and the 70-200mm zoom lens all on a Canon professional digital camera shooting RAW format and then processed in Photoshop. 12-2-07 On these types of resort lifestyle advertising images it is extraordinarily difficult to get all of the elements perfect. The water needs to be very clear, the water can't be too deep, the waves need to be almost not there, the models need to be comfortable in seaweed filled waters, with the occasional Jellyfish cruising by, and everyone gets red marks on the body from laying on and moving around in sand. Additionally the best time to shoot these is in the Winter and with most models having a small percentage of body fat this means they get cold quickly in the water. 11-24-07 - This lifestyle advertising photography shot was taken with the last 3 minutes of direct sunlight of the day. We had arrived and it started to rain so we all stayed in the cars until it had almost stopped. I got out and everyone followed me to the beach. I knew there was a lifeguard stand close by that would give some protection from the rain. We arrived & I had the models climb onto the stand which had a narrow walkway all the way around it and it was under the roof. So I started to shoot just to get the models warmed up. I then moved them around the corner and shot some more. Within 3-5 minutes of the sun being down the clouds moved and I got 3 minutes of direct sunlight. 11-24-07 - This editorial style beauty photography image was shot in a hotel room in Boca Raton and the entire shoot took about 2 hours. The challenge is to shoot in such a confined space and still get a great shot. 11-21-07 - This advertising beauty photography image was shot on Hollywood Beach. The original concept was to shoot in the water however the wind was too strong and huge waves would make it almost impossible to shoot so I had the model sit on a lifeguard stand to elevate her which kept the sand out of her eyes. I did not like her swimsuit for this type of beauty shot so I grabbed a towel I had brought and had her drop the swimsuit straps and hold the towel up. We shot 80 images in about 20 minutes. 10-28-07 - This personal Photography project was shot in the Los Angeles flower market and took about 4 hours to shoot. The market opens around 3-4 am & starts to close around noon, so you need to arrive early. The only problem is deciding on what to shoot, there are so many choices. 10-06-07 - This series of Advertising Beauty Photography shots were shot in the garden of a private villa in Malcesine, Italy in the rain. The model is wearing mascara and lipstick for make up and no other makeup at all. 10-06-07 - This series of Advertising Beauty Photography shots were shot in the garden of a private villa in Malcesine, Italy in the rain. The model is wearing mascara and lipstick for make up and no other makeup at all. 10-05-07 - This is a series of travel type of images. They were all shot in a private home in Milano, Italy near the center of town, the Duomo. 10-4-07 - In this series of advertising beauty Photography shots the model had mascara & lipstick, no other makeup was used. Lighting wise is sunlight with 2 California Sunbounce reflectors. The location was in a private home in downtown Milano. The construction on the home started in the 1300's. 10-8-07 - This series of advertising resort Photography images was shot in about 3 hours late in the day. These lifestyle images were shot for a rental villa in Malcesine, Italy, near Verona, on Lake Garda. I had communicated with the models what to bring in the way of wardrobe & I brought some of my resort collection of wardrobe too. 9-23-07 - Milano, Italy - So there I was, in the "daylight" studio shooting an advertising project for a client and I just happen to glance out the window while the client was working on styling the product. It has been raining all day and I saw this street lifestyle scene. The combination of the red car & the red umbrella was more than I could ignore. But there was also a somewhat well... really a rather rotund woman using a ugly umbrella walking in the opposite direction. So I just removed her hefty self and her tacky umbrella. 9-22-07 - So after my June shoot in the little old ladies’ house in Nesso, I have wanted to go back and shoot the Castle ruins. These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot for the Como Province Tourist Office. 9-22-07 - These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot for the Como Province Tourist Office of this Romanesque church, San Giacomo di Spurano, on Lake Como, is in the town of Ossuccio. The pre-Roman origins of this village are confirmed by votive altar from the second century A.D. that belonged to some people called the "Ausuciates", who gave the village their name. 9-22-07 - These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot in a cemetery on Lake Como in a town called Carate Urio. It is the tomb of Luigi Comitti and his family. I noticed the pattern as soon as I started to head down the stairs. 9-21-07 - These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot in Como, Italy on a project for the Como Province Tourist Office, go here to see 8 selects and read on how I was able to expand the contrast & tonal range to show detail in very deep shadows and still hold the brightest highlight. 9-23-07 - This was shot directly across the street from the North Milano Railroad station in Como, a commuter rail line. When I lived here in Como I would take the train returning from Milan to the last stop, Lago di Como, cross the street & just sit on one of the many benches and look at the lake & the lights at night. I was walking about and this group of swans landed in one of them several little harbors in Como. My first Italian fashion shoot in 1985 was just off to the right where the boats are pulled up the "steps". 9-20-07 - These Editorial Travel Photography images were shot in Como, Italy on a project for the Como Province Tourist Office, go here to see 2 selects. 9-13-07 - Added an Advertising Photography Problem Solving section showing solutions to advertising and editorial fashion, beauty, industrial, lifestyle, lingerie and swim wear photographic problems. Go here to look at some examples. 9-10-07 - Industrial Advertising Photography project. When shooting Advertising Industrial imagery or Editorial Industrial imagery, it is sometimes difficult to make it interesting. Take these HVAC items: Almost devoid of color, largely flat panels shaped like a box and made from galvanized steel. The key is to shoot them without large areas of light and without dark areas. Also I needed to hold the specular highlights to zero. Given the shiny metallic material these industrial items are made of, a tall order. 8-19-07 - Sunrise in the golf resort town of Boca Raton, FL. - My client had just bought this golf course a few months before I arrived. The roughs, fairways and greens were all in a sad state and he needed imagery to help market the course. My contact with the course had called me due to my being a lifestyle and golf resort shooter & asked if I could make the course look better than it really did. After arriving at the course I spent hours in the golf cart looking for angles to shoot. I finally found a few and even then I really had to work in making the course look at least good. 8-18-07 - Florida - This Lifestyle Resort Advertising and/or Editorial Photography image was shot near Miami Beach. On these types of images it is extraordinarily difficult to get all of the elements perfect. The waves, the wind and the current are all moving the models and the photographer. I position the models perfectly and a big wave comes in and moves them up and to the right or the left, sometimes several feet. What once was a perfectly framed image is now a problem because they have been moved up. In doing so their heads that were outlined by the beach are now in such a position that they have palm trees growing out of them, not too professional. Technically this is some of the most demanding imagery I have ever shot. Not only do I have the usual exposure, composition, model direction, watching for wardrobe problems I now have to deal with models constantly moving up & down & to the left, to the right and getting salt water in their eyes & nose. Plus I’m moving up, down to the left to the right. When a big wave breaks over the housing the focus does not work very well for several seconds. In addition to all of this the location only works light wise at sunrise. PLUS on this shot the sun was totally blocked by the clouds so I then had to use an electronic waterproof strobe to provide the light needed followed by a huge amount of Photoshop work to finish the image. 8-17-07 - Florida - This Lifestyle Resort Advertising and/or Editorial Photography image was shot near Miami Beach. 12-6-06 - Shot a series of images for a Cowboy Fashion Photography client. Shot just outside of Las Vegas, NV on a perfect afternoon in direct sunlight. Notice that the hats do not loose detail even in the very hard sunlight. This is because I had an assistant 70 feet towards the sun with a light modifying device that is normally only used in the motion picture industry. This allows me to maintain the detail without loosing the "edge" of hard light. I had another assistant off to my left with a 4' x 6' California Sunbounce reflector bouncing light primarily on the woman's face to ensure a good "Beauty" light. This image was shot with a 200mm f1.8 lens shot at f1.8. Shooting a "Fast" telephoto lens wide open makes the background blur out which pulls the eye to the models & the hats. The image was then processed with an Adobe Camera RAW Converter then retouched and finished in Photoshop. 10-31-06 - Added a series of 6 Advertising Flash web banners shot & produced for a professional race team. This project started well before sunrise which was about 7 AM. We were on the ranch about 5:30 AM to call in the herd of horses. The cowboys then saddled up and rode out at pre-dawn to locate the herd of cattle and drive them to the location I had scouted a few days before. I had several radios in use to be able to communicate with the cowboys as to the status of pushing the cattle in position and then directing them where to push the herd next. 9-26-06 - Sunrise in Wolcott, Colorado - This was shot while scouting for a Cowboy Advertising Photography Photography project. 9-11-06 - Shot an Advertising Beauty Photography project with Diana. 9-9-06 - Predawn & Sunrise, shot an Advertising Lifestyle Resort Photography project on Hollywood Beach. Shot with a Canon 85mm f1.8 set at f3.2 on a Canon digital camera. 5-6-06 - Shot an Advertising Beauty Lingerie Photography project with Vanessa. 4-28-06 - Just posted a new Flash Cowboy movie project which is from a series Cowboy images taken in Wolcott, CO. at one of my favorite locations to shoot in the winter. It is just off I-70 making it easy to get to, it has a huge pasture allowing sweeping light to get in, it has several stands of trees, mounted Cowboys, 60-70 horses and about 100 head of Texas Longhorn cattle. The owner always was after me to shoot in the fall so in September I flew out and spent a week shooting. In this image I'm panning the camera with the action to help keep some of the image sharp enough to see what is in the scene and yet still have a lot of blur. The very nature of panning with a long shutter speed while hand holding the camera means I need to shoot a lot of images to get one or two stunning images. The opening Flash movie segment, which took about three hours to design and prep & less than 10 minutes to shoot, was shot 10-15 minutes after the sun had set which allowed me to get the exposure down to 1/10 of a second and get the sky I wanted. What I wanted was for the cattle to walk without stopping to graze. I showed my cowboy wrangler what I needed and he put some feed down at the north end of the pasture and allowed the cattle to eat and then pushed them off of the feed to the southern end. He then had the cowboys push the cattle to the north end while I walked alongside the cowboys & the cows looking at framing. When I had determined the Line I wanted the cows to walk I showed this to the head wrangler. He then had the cowboys push the cattle back south & held them there until I said, Go! What I did was to shoot a few frames, pick up the camera bag and run to the next spot and shoot a few frames, grab the camera bag and run again. The time frame that a photographer has to shoot this quality, intensity and color of light after sunset is around 8-10 minutes, which is not long. At the same time I'm giving directions to the wranglers holding the herd tight, keeping the speed to the level I was looking for and moving in the direction I wanted. The second Flash movie segment was shot earlier in the day while prepping for the final sequence. 4-22-06 - Shot an Advertising beauty Photography project on Bethany near Atlanta, GA.
