About the Image

This commercial advertising fashion image was shot in Milan, Italy. After more than 30 years creating both still and motion content for advertising agencies and direct clients, I've learned that good fashion editorial, and advertising photography, is often about contrast.

This location already had years of "character" built up, so the job was to the job was to shape the light, control the shadows, and let the background contrast with the model the wardrobe and the model. I tend to look for texture in my imagery.

When I'm in Milano, I stay with a dear friend and I pass by this location every time I walk to the Metro station closest to the apartment. It is a short and very narrow alley and is a dead end. So not a lot of people walking through the set. Actually, no traffic. A few will stop and watch. But Milan is full of photographers so it is not an unusual thing to see.

The Gear:
Canon camera set to 1/80 second shutter speed, 400 ISO and a Canon 16-35mm set to 17mm using f7.1 ISO. (FYI: f7.1 is F5.6 and two thirds.)

The Light:
The a Lumedyne Signature strobe head with a 40° grid to limit light "Splatter".

We are based in Atlanta, Georgia, Los Angeles, California, both in the USA, & Milan, Italy, and serve the nation and travel worldwide for projects, both video and stills. On average we travel 175 days a year from all over the USA, to Singapore to Japan, Europe and the Middle East. We are normally in Europe 2 or 3 times a year, mostly Italy and Germany, shooting for clients there.
