This is our Fashion & Beauty Reel shot in Italy, Germany, France, New York City, Miami Beach, and throughout the USA by Award Winning, Atlanta, GA director, short films, marketing films, advertising photography and motion directorAn advertising beauty video shot in Milan, Italy by award Winning director and photographer, Steve Thornton, Atlanta, GA and Milan, Italy This advertising fashion and beauty project was shot in a private home near Atlanta, GA USA. The challenge for me was to limit where the light went in this very small room. By keeping the Lantern close to the model, and using the blackout skirt, I was able to have a lot of light on the model and due to the inverse square rule of light, I was able to keep the rest of the scene relatively dark. This fashion and beauty video of Lilian was shot near Atlanta, GA. Well executed backlit imagery is hard to so but gives a warm glow on the is beauty image. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This advertising Beauty project was shot in a private home near Atlanta, GA. On this project I did not know for sure what the light/weather was going to do, which is not uncommon for the hot and humid summer in the southeast USA, so I brought a wide selection of lighting gear: A Sunbounce roller bag with reflectors, silks, boom sticks w/grip heads, a case of Lumedyne strobe gear, 3 1000 & 5 500 watt hot lights, 2 with softboxes, 4 light stands plus several "C" stands, sand bags, 2 full sets of apple boxes, a bag of cameras with 7 lenses, plus a fluid head with CF sticks. In other words, a lot of gear. This lifestyle beauty video of Lashae was shot near Atlanta, GA in a private home. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This fashion video of Faith was shot near Atlanta, GA in an industrial area. This was Faith's first video and she was great. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This Beauty Video, a close up of a model's eye was shot by Award Winning, Atlanta, GA director, short films, marketing films, advertising photography and motion director This fashion and beauty project was shot in front of a cement plant using late in the day sunlight. This advertising fashion video was shot through 2 sheets of dirty double pane glass by Award Winning, Atlanta, GA director, short films, marketing films, advertising photography and motion director This fashion and beauty photo was shot in Milan, Italy at what was a large industrial complex converted into loft spaces. Yana, the model, had arrived in Milan 2 days before from Ukraine. She has been modeling for about a year and has worked in Japan and Taiwan. She is a very accomplished model at age 17 and we were very happy she was available to shoot. These beauty photographs of Gracen, a wonderful, tall, slim & sexy model, were shot near Atlanta, GA in a private home. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This fashion editorial video in Milan, Italy was shot by Steve, along with his styling and assisting crew. This location is about one half a mile (800 meters) from the Milano Duomo, the main cathedral. The video was shot both on a tripod and using a Steadicam. Steve had shot 2 other projects in the morning and had scheduled the model used in this project to arrive at 12:30 p.m. But she was about 2½ hours late due to the job she modeled for in the morning running long. The ability for the model to move, project and be 100% "comfortable in her own skin" is paramount in capturing the imagery we were able to get. This was Yana's first project with Steve and he hired her for another project 4 days later. This fashion editorial style video was shot in Littlerock, CA late in the day using a mix of daylight and artificial light. The artifical light was from a 500 watt lamp that allows one to focus the light either into a spot or a flood, we set this to spot. This look took 24 minutes to shoot both stills and video. Most of the delay was spent setting up the jib. This fashion video project was shot in Milan, Italy for Katya Fernandez a fashion accessory designer. This is her new line of Italy silk scarfs printed in Como, Italy, just north of Milan about 30 miles (48KM). We had a perfect day to shoot, blue sky, warm but not hot and a stiff wind that was just what we needed. We put this together in a matter of hours the day before. Emiliano and I were prepping for another shoot for Katya and around 3 p.m. Katya asked if I had time to shoot the next day and I said yes then I suggested Yana, the model because I had just shot with her a few days before on another project and thought she was great. This part of the fashion video project was shot in Como, Italy, where I lived in 1985 & 86. Every time I am in Milan, I take at least one day, or part of a day, to go visit Como. I eat in a small restaurant on a piazza that is run by a family along with their 9 room hotel, which I stay at when I want or need to be in Como. Part of this hotel is a private parking garage that is behind 2 large doors and is where we shot. This fashion video project was shot in Littlerock, California. The "Rocketship" started life as a belly tank for a jet fighter. It was bought at surplus by a racer who turned it into a race car to run at the Bonneville salt flats in Utah. They fabricated a windshield, cut openings into the tank for the driver and the engine, added a front axle & rear axle and installed a 455 cubic inch (7.45 liters) Oldsmobile engine. The current owner bought the tank as a photographic prop. You can still see the list of sponsors on the side of the tank, Micky Thompson, Engle Cams, Burbank Speed and others. This fashion video project was shot at what was a large family farm in Milan, Italy. Steve shoots at this location often and has seen it change over the last 3½ years. "The vegetation is taking over and some of the buildings have collapsed, Steve comments. "In a few more years the farm will all be gone, either through decay or being bulldozed to make room for a warehouse or apartments, kind of sad really." He adds, "It has been laying fallow for several years, slowly deteriorating and now a lot of items, most notably to me are the hand made hand hammered steel frames for the barn windows seems to have been stolen. My guess is they wound up in an antique shop or in someone's home for decoration, they were in fact very cool and I miss them." This fashion editorial still & video project is a mix of video & stills shot on an abandoned farm just outside of Milan, Italy. The normal challenge of any mixed media project is getting enough still images to choose from & then have enough time to also shoot video. The "Problem" with creating the still images is, I am creating a slice of life at 1/1000 of one second. So eyes can be shut, the mouth could look strange, the hands may not look pretty, the feet might be in transition etc. This fashion editorial project is a mix of video & stills shot close to the main railroad tracks of the main International Train Station in Milan. This part of town is a bit run down with some older buildings with parts of the wall having exposed bricks. This was shot in Milan, Italy close to sunset in an open field near Linate airport. The only problem were the number of flying insects driving the model to distraction. I shot as quickly as I could. 7 minutes after we started I had shot 230+ still images plus 4 video clips, we were done. This magazine editorial, Fashion & Beauty photography and motion picture video, was shot for Cowgirl Magazine by Award Winning, Atlanta, GA director, short films, marketing films, advertising photography and motion director This part of the project was shot in Como, Italy, where I lived in 1985 & 86. Every time I am in Milan, I take at least one day, or part of a day, to go visit Como. Most of the delay was spent setting up the jib. This Beauty and Body project was shot in a hay field in Ball Ground, GA about 20 minutes before sunset. This advertising beauty project was shot in a private home near Atlanta, GA and is shot using natural light. This is the first time this model has ever worked on a video project and it was a big adjustment for her. This still and video Beauty project was shot in grass midday and in a private home near Atlanta, GA USA. This fashion and beauty project was shot in a concrete plant parking lot near Atlanta. The advantages are there is no one around on the weekends, you can drive right to the spot you want to shoot and you have a clear shot to the setting sun. This advertising beauty video of Frankie was shot in Paris, France in the Marriott Hotel on the Avenue Champs-Elysses. This advertising beauty video of Frankie was shot in Paris, France in the Marriott Hotel on the Avenue Champs-Elysses. This beauty video of Ashlyn was shot near Atlanta, GA. Almost always, if there is going to be wind, it will be in the wrong direction, e.g., blowing the model's hair from the back of her head, surrounding her face. This was the case in this video. Fortunately in one clip I was able to turn the model so the wind would blow the hair across her face.. gently. There was a clump of wispy clouds that diffused the sun just enough to soften the light. This beauty video of Faith was shot near Atlanta, GA in a private home. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This fashion and beauty video of Lilian was shot near Atlanta, GA. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood How I Shot It! This fashion image was shot in Zingst, Germany during a photo festival. From Steve's first test shot until he said to pack up was about 25 minutes. Most of this time was in setting up and adjusting the lights and finding exactly where he wanted the camera to be.

How I shot it!
How I Shot It! While in Cologne for Photokina, I shot a couple of advertising images for Alan Michael USA, a client in Beverly Hills, California. I had shot with Esther 2 years earlier while giving a presentation on Guido Karp's "Leading Photographers of the World" stage at Photokina. I knew I wanted to shoot at the train station and had e-mailed Esther about the shoot and she agreed to meet. A Behind The Scenes video of a fashion photography shoot inside a tunnel close to Blevio, Italy on Lake Como. We went here to shoot because it started to rain and I remembered this location. This used to be part of the road that runs around the lake. As you can see it is narrow and some times a bus going one way met a big truck driving the other way and both would not fit at the same time, causing a huge traffic mess. I know this because I have sat in several of them living in Como and driving in the country side. Fortunately they dug a very large and wide tunnel and this was not needed so it is now closed on one end so only bicycles or foot traffic is permitted to pass through. This fashion image was shot in Cologne, Germany during Photokina, the world's largest camera show where 190,000 people attend. This was shot about 50 minutes after sunset so we had some skylight, but not a lot of it. How I Shot It! This behind the scenes fashion video was shot in Mialn, Italy. How I Shot It! This was part of a fashion editorial shot of a magazine. The way I lit the model for this part was having LED lights and strobe inside the softbox and had one of my assistants walk with us as we crossed the street. As you can see the softbox encroached several times but I only needed 7 seconds of video total and we shot over 45 seconds, so I knew I was covered. How I Shot It! This fashion image was shot in an old and all but abandoned farm in Milan, Italy. The farm is one of my favorite locations to shoot and I do not know how much longer it will be around. Sooner or later it will be destroyed and condos built in it's place. How I Shot It! The farm is one of my favorite locations to shoot and I do not know how much longer it will be around. How I Shot It! Steve was hired to teach photo workshops in Zingst at the photo festival they have every June. While there he decided to shoot portraits on the Mayor, and other prominent people in town. Steve has been shooting in this location for years so he knew what to bring and what to expect. The "Problems" with this location were: The constant wind, the cold temperate and the mayor's inexperience bring in front of the camera. This fashion image was shot in Zingst, Germany during a photo festival. From Steve's first test shot until he said to pack up, he shot 68 images in 11½ minutes. Most of this time was in setting up and adjusting the lights and finding exactly where he wanted the camera to be. How I Shot It! How I Shot It!
